'Reference' Dark Power Pro 11 ticks all the right boxes

The Dutch IT site Hardware.Info has published a round-up of passive PSUs, including two 'normal' PSUs for comparison. One of these is the be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 550W. Intriguingly, apart from one Silverstone model these passive PSUs make more noise than the reference Dark Power Pro 11. The editor recommends buying a decent semi-passive or active model, such as the Dark Power Pro 11 550W, which has won an Ultimate Award earlier in the year.

“Only a single model turns out to be quieter than the actively cooled Dark Power Pro 11 reference power supply, namely the SilverStone Nightjar SST-NJ520 520W. The Silverstone is the quietest power supply in this test with a noise level of only 20 dB(A) at maximum load. Downside is that it only comes with a three year warranty, very meager for a power supply that has an average price of 146 pounds / 168 euros. [...] Considering the test results we cannot think of a scenario where a passive ATX power supply can be an objectively better choice than a good semi-passive or active model.”
